Star Fields and Clusters

This set contains observations of star fields and clusters. The plates were obtained through two astrographic cameras coupled to the main 649.9cm tube of the equatorial telescope of 45.8cm objective lens aperture. These are two cameras made by the english manufactures Taylor, with the diameter of the objective lens of 25.44cm and focal distance of 17.28cm.

Note: The images of scanned plates have their names formed, initially, by three letters associated to a number to facilitate their location in the digital database and physical archive of the Observatório Nacional library.

The gallery contains 72 images.

               The Pleiades (Messier 45) is a group of stars in the Taurus constellation.
               This is an open star cluster. It may be spotted on both hemispheres.
               Its distance from Earth is 444.2 light years. Its magnitude: 1.6. It may
               be seen without optical equipment.

More Information

In this image it is possible to see a cross of diffraction, suggesting
               that it was obtained with a reflecting telescope, because this cross
               indicates the presence of the supporting sticks of the secondary mirror.
               However, it is written over the plate that one of the Taylor cameras was
               used, which optical system is the refracting type.
